Most important gear
We planned to stay 2-3 months, so we brought several items. I would say our hiking wear and carrier and jogging stroller were the most used.

And Let The Gap Year Begin…
Ecuador is beautiful. Just google it to see. It’s filled with everything from rainforests, to waterfalls, to beaches. We chose Quito because there was a class to become certified in teaching English. Quito sits high at 9400’ above sea level. At this height, it took us about a week to fully acclimate.
Best of the trip
Visit the equator, then visit the “real” equator, then learn that neither are the equator
Climb Basilica del Voto Nacional
Take the teleferico up to the base of Pichincha Volcano (above photo)
Trip story
It’s hard to sum Quito up in a few sentences considering we were there for almost 3 months. I will say that it is gorgeous and the weather is perfect (70º every single day) It truly was an eternal spring!
But, as in a lot of Latin America, you do need to be careful and we never walked alone after dark. The main “threat” are things called “express kidnappings”. Basically, you are picked up and taken to an ATM to withdraw all of your money and then let go. We never felt in danger, but we heard from friends that live there that it is a real thing and to avoid it, stay in groups and don’t walk long distances at night.
Where to stay - This Airbnb is perfectly located in a safe, walkable area. Perfect for families. And just $39 a night!
Where to eat - We loved taking visitors to Cafe Mosaico. The food is good but the view is FANTASTIC. Make sure to try the hot Canelazo
What to do - I can not recommend this tour more! Chef Sebastian takes you through the local markets and introduces you to the beautiful local foods. Then you go back to his house and he teaches you to cook an Ecuadorian dish. Highly, Highly recommend.
Up for Adventure - Take the teleferico to the base of Pichincha Volcano. From there, you can ride horse, hike to the top of the volcano or just swing away your worries.
